How do I receive a Project In A Box?

Boxes are available for curbside pick-up between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. week days, and may be kept for up to 2 weeks. The box must then be returned via curbside drop-off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Pick-up and drop-off is located at the lower level door of the Northwoods Center at Nicolet Area Technical College in Rhinelander. Deliveries to public venues in Minocqua and Three Lakes are possible by calling us at 715-365-2750 or emailing apwilliams@wisc.edu and arrangements can be made.

Are items in a Project In A Box safe for children?

All projects and materials have been chosen specifically with youth learners in mind. If they are recommended for certain ages, it will be listed in the box description. Please be careful to keep project items away from younger siblings for their safety. Adult help and supervision is always recommended.

What About COVID?

Our pick-up and drop-off schedule ensures that we have time to quarantine project materials and sanitize the items that can be sanitized. All boxes are quarantined for at least 3 days before they are available for check-out. If you feel like more time is necessary, you are welcome to quarantine the box at your home for additional days. However, the box would still need to be returned by two weeks after you received the box. During drop-off, if staff are present, they will wear a mask, use hand sanitizer, and practice social distancing. We ask that you do the same during drop-off. If staff are not present, you may place your box outside the lower level door of the Northwoods Center.

What if I need more help?

We have tried to provide most of the items to help your project be a success. Some items you may have to find at home or pick up at the store. Consumable supplies (things that can be used up) should not be placed back into the box when you are done with them. Included in the box are tips for starting the project as well as the contact information for a 4-H leader who is experienced in that project topic who can help answer your questions if you need some extra help. For some projects we have also included vetted YouTube suggestions that can provide further information or instruction.

What if I lose or break something?

Please use the project materials in a safe and responsible way. Many items and books have been donated by people who want to provide learning opportunities for area youth. They believe in your future and want to help! Respect their gift. That being said, we understand that sometimes things happen that cannot be helped. Please be honest with us if the roof leaked and ruined a book, the dog chewed one of the pieces, your little brother ran off with and lost something important or a similar disaster occurred. These are all things that happen in real life. We understand! If you can help us replace the item that is broken or lost, that is greatly appreciated so that more kids can have the same opportunity that you did. If things are tight and you are unable replace the item, please talk to us. We understand that situation too.

What if I don’t return the box?

If you have not contacted the 4-H Office at 715-365-2750 or emailed Anne Williams, Oneida County 4-H Program Educator, at apwilliams@wisc.edu with reasoning as to why you cannot return the box on time prior to the box return deadline, you will be charged $1 per day every day the box is not returned. Project In A Box is meant for youth and teens to be able to affordably explore new interests, so please be considerate and return the box on time so others can have this opportunity! If you have an issue or problem, just let us know before the return date.
